Artist Bio
Liz Train grew up on the island of Kauai. Her mother and father were both painters and had a family gallery “The Spouting Horn Studio” on the road to the Spouting Horn, near Poipu. She fell in love with clay at age four and began to make batik fabric as a teenager. Liz has a BFA in ceramics and an MFA in Fiber Arts from the University of Hawaii. After graduating, Liz taught weaving and fiber arts at the University of Hawaii from 1980–1987. She worked as a museum educator at the Contemporary Museum from 1998–2005. Liz taught adult classes in Fiber Arts and Weaving at the Honolulu Museum of Art School from 2006–2020. As an advanced level Teaching Artist she works with the Hawaii State Art Museum on the ArtBento outreach projects. She also worked with the Artists in the Schools program and taught art at many elementary schools, including after school classes at Noelani Elementary School. In 2022 she began teaching adult fiber arts classes in the newly opened Hawaii Handweaver’s Hui studio at the Downtown Art Center. In addition to fiber art (batik, felting, weaving, and paper making) Liz enjoys working with fused glass, ceramics, printmaking, and mixed media. Her work has been included in many juried and group exhibits and is in the collection of the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and Arts, as well as many private collections.

Firelight
Artist Statement
My work is inspired by nature, primarily the Hawaiian landscape. No matter what media I work in, I start with color and texture. My usual color palette uses the greens of the lush gardens and the blues of the ocean. The Flashpoint fire show theme inspires me to work with red hot orange volcanic images and perhaps, sunsets that create a green flash.
