Jackie Mild-Lau

Artist Bio

Artist, educator, facilitator and volunteer are Jackie’s most frequently worn hats. She was born in Virginia, raised in Maryland and moved to Hawai‘i in 1980. After studying Art and Architecture at Universities of Maryland and Hawai‘i, she graduated as a sculptor from the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa (UHM) with a BFA in 1982 and MFA in 1987.

Before, during and since that time she has spent many years teaching children and adults: Introduction to 3 Dimensional Design, Outreach-Bronze Casting, and Continuing Education-Figure Sculpture classes at UHM, Kapiolani Community College, and Windward Community College; as an assistant curator at the Honolulu Museum of Art; art program director at The Boys and Girls Club of Honolulu; as a visiting artist in many public and private schools across Oahu as well as leading Girl Scouts; teaching Art Enrichment at Sunday School; and swimming for the YWCAs and Red Cross; and Outdoor Biology Instructional Strategies at the Smithsonian Institute, Chesapeake Bay Center.

She has collaborated with students on several large mural installations, notably at Roosevelt High and Kawananakoa Middle Schools in addition to completing commissions for the Hawaii Maritime Center, Bishop Museum, Diamond Head Community Bark Park, The Equus Hotel, and many private individuals.

Currently, she sculpts as a freelance artist and educator and runs a small foundry from a shared shop space in Kaneohe, Hawaii. There, she casts her own work in bronze and teaches sculpture and bronze casting using ceramic shell investment to adults. The classes serve students wishing to gain new skills and present an opportunity for professional artists to cast their own work.

Jackie is a long time member, past president and current Hawaii Craftsmen Board member. She designs and installs their large exhibitions, most recently at the Downtown Art Center, where she also helped curate, design and install exhibitions including: “Celebration, Winter Group Show”; “Something Fishy”; “Out in the Elements”, “Ho‘opuka”; and “DAC the Halls”.
